The project successfully achieved its core aim of improving health conditions and reducing isolation and loneliness among 100 ex-British Gurkha veterans and their spouses living in Royal Borough of Greenwich. Through a structured programme of culturally appropriate health and wellbeing activities, the project supported participants to improve both their physical and mental wellbeing while strengthening social connections within community.
In total, we delivered 179 activities designed to address the specific health and wellbeing challenges faced by the beneficiaries. These included Yoga sessions, health and wellbeing workshops, and information sessions. As a result, participants reported increased confidence in managing their health, improved awareness of available services, and stronger social networks.
A key success of the project was high level of engagement and participation from beneficiaries. Participants attended activities and actively contributed to peer support within the group. The programme created a safe and welcoming space where veterans and their spouses could share experiences, reduce feelings of isolation, and build stronger relationships within community. The project also strengthened connections between the Gurkha community and local health and support organisations and access to services.
The project faced challenges during delivery. Many participants experienced language barriers, limited digital skills, and cultural hesitation in accessing mainstream health services. In addition, some beneficiaries had mobility issues or long-term health conditions that made regular participation difficult. To overcome these challenges, activities were delivered in culturally sensitive ways, including providing interpretation support and working with trusted community leaders to encourage participation. Delivery methods were also adapted to ensure activities remained accessible for older participants.
Minor adjustments were made during project to better respond to participants’ needs. Additional three health and wellbeing workshops were organised in response to the interest and demands of the beneficiaries. The project originally aimed to engage 100 older beneficiaries but exceeded this target across most activities. Yoga sessions reached 152 participants, and workshops attendance consistently surpassed the planned 25 beneficiaries per session across all topics. This reflected strong community interest and needs. These adjustments ensured the programme remained responsive to the evolving needs of beneficiaries.
The grant played a critical role in helping address health inequalities affecting the Gurkha veteran community in Greenwich, where language barriers, cultural differences, and limited awareness of available services often limit access to mainstream health and wellbeing support.
The project also created lasting value through collaboration with NHS Oxleas and other local health providers. A key achievement was the development of a dementia awareness video in simple Nepali, produced with the NHS Oxleas Memory Service, Greenwich, to improve understanding, early recognition, and prevention of dementia within the Nepalese community. The partnership has also led to the creation of Nepalese Community Engagement Steering Group, which meets every two to three months to discuss key health issues and strengthen community engagement with local services.
Overall, the project has made a meaningful contribution to improving health, wellbeing, and social connectedness among ex-British Gurkha veterans and their spouses in Greenwich while helping to reduce the impact of health inequalities affecting this community.

20. Postcode Neighbourhood Trust (2020-2021)
This funding will be spent on reducing isolation and loneliness of 25 older ex-British Gurkha veterans who have been a victim of COVID-19. The following activities will be implemented digitally using laptops. 1. Songs/jokes for fun 2. Sharing culinary tips and skills 3. Gardening tips and techniques 4. Online Yoga sessions 5. Sharing government guidelines and updates about COVID-19 6. Other activities that are refreshing and enjoyable To implement the above activities: a. 30 laptops will be purchased and distributed to the beneficiaries b. A part-time project coordinator will be recruited and trained c. 3 volunteers will be recruited and trained d. Beneficiaries will be trained on the use laptop and the use of zoom or Microsoft team application
The idea of this project emerged from the beneficiaries itself. Due to COVID-19 these vulnerable people have to be confined to their homes for long which has resulted in severe isolation, loneliness and frustration. As CESI have been working with this community for the last 12 years, they are familiar with CESI and thus they approached CESI to find out ways they could engage with and reduce their isolation. Thus, the activities were designed in consultation with the beneficiaries themselves.
This project will make huge difference in the lives of these older people. The quality of life of the older Ex-British veterans will be improved. They will feel less isolated by being engaged with other people sharing experiences and having fun. They will learn some culinary and gardening skills as well. They will have an improved health by attending the Yoga sessions.
This grant has been instrumental in improving health and reducing isolation and loneliness of the older ex-British Gurkha Veterans, who have been hard hit by COVID-19,
by giving them an opportunity to engage and interact among each other. This project has proved very effective in bringing community together, sharing their experiences by
building strong network. The beneficiaries got an opportunity to share their knowledge and skills each other including culinary and gardening tips and techniques whom they
had not spoken for a long time. Information on healthy living including yoga sessions have been very useful for their health. Jokes, stories and songs during sessions were
very much entertaining and refreshing. All these have certainly helped reduce their isolation and loneliness to a good extent.
19. The National Lottery Community Fund and HM Government
COVID-19 Recovery and Support for Ex-British Gurkha Older People. (2020-21)
The objective of this project is to reduce isolation and loneliness of the vulnerable Ex-British Gurkha veterans caused due to COVID-19 and the subsequent lock down shielding them and restricting their movement. This project will provide them opportunities to have an increased interaction and engagement with their community fellows that will enhance their mood/mental well-being and reduce their isolation. This will be achieved through online support for a period of five months. Programme coordinator with support from the volunteers will host the programme. They will be trained for using the laptop for participating in online meetings using software program such as zoom or Microsoft team. The participants will be contacted digitally to discuss and solicit their stories in relation to what happened to them during the pandemic, what and when did they feel most difficult, when did they become very worried and anxious, how did they manage to live, how did they manage their shopping and medical needs, what they thought was needed to manage such crisis and what do they suggest to be prepared for any possible crisis in future. Apart from the above, other activities such as singing songs, online Yoga sessions etc. will be included. Important information including the government guidelines and updates about COVID-19 will also be shared on a regular basis. The output will lead to giving an insight on what is needed in this transition for the communities to move towards recovery and renewal and what is possible in the future. A total of 20 older ex-British Gurkhas veterans from 10 household will benefit from this project. This project will make a huge difference in the lives of the proposed beneficiaries. They will reduce social isolation and loneliness and increased happiness. This is completely a new idea which has emerged due to COVID-19 Pandemic.
Before COVID-19 pandemic, CESI has been supporting this Ex-British Gurkha community in areas of increasing their access to Health and healthier living, Housing and welfare benefits, reducing their isolation and loneliness and integrating them into the local wider communities. These activities were suddenly stopped due to COVID -19 outbreak as they were shielded in their homes with movement restriction. Thus, because of COVID-19 crisis there will be increased demand for services and support for these vulnerable people. Similarly, since the idea of this project emerged from the community itself, CESI will connect communities and support communities to work together digitally to respond to COVID-19.
This project will engage them online to speak to their fellow community, get involved in activities targeted to reduce their isolation and loneliness. This will create an opportunity to come together and deliver the project successfully.

1. Integration of the Nepalese Women (Art Project) 2017-2018
This project is funded by The Big Lottery Fund -Awards for All.
The Project
The aim of this project is to enable Gurkha/Nepalese women better cope with adapting to the major life changing event of resettlement from their homeland. This project will provide a ‘bridge’ between their culture and the culture they are in, helping to address some of the dislocation Nepali women feel when settling into a new way of life in an entirely different culture, from the farming in the mountains to a huge international city.
Through the engagement of the group this will encourage participants to tell their story and share some of their experiences, through being creative; drawing, painting, photography, puppetry, video, installation and storytelling.
Therefore, the objective of this project is to engage the Nepalese/Ghurka women in a multi-disciplined art project culminating in a touring exhibition of the art work created whilst being in the art group. This will include paintings, images, photographs and video.
The major outcome of this project is that social isolation and loneliness of 30 Nepalese women will be reduced. Secondly, they will be better integrated into the wider local community with improved English language skills and culture and being engaged in various activities.
Project activities include:
30 Ghurka and Nepalese women over a 6-month period will work together in 2 groups. Each group will work for half a day and engage in art work facilitated by the trainer. A visit to an art gallery will also be organized where they will see and learn how to enhance their creative skills in art making. An exhibition will be organized for one week period where the Nepalese women will meet and greet many people from local communities and will be able to tell their stories and share their experiences. Local community visitors will have an opportunity to learn about the Nepalese culture and traditions reflected in the art work of the Nepalese women. It is all about the ‘’exchange’’ aspect of shared skills, language, values and culture on an equal path with the local community. This will help build confidence of the Nepalese women.
